The language of modern digital visibility is changing. This glossary defines the terms surgeons and practice managers need to understand AI search, answer-engine optimization, and measurable authority.

- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
The practice of structuring content so AI-powered answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) can extract, cite, and surface it in response to user queries. AEO extends traditional SEO by optimizing for citation rather than just ranking: the goal is to become the source an AI quotes, not merely a link in a list.
- AI citation
A reference or attribution an AI system gives when it draws information from a source. In AI search results, a citation links the answer back to the originating page, driving traffic and establishing authority. For surgeons, earning AI citations means being the named source when patients ask AI assistants about procedures, conditions, or specialists.
- AI search visibility
The measurable presence of a practice, surgeon, or content within AI-powered search and answer systems. Unlike traditional search visibility (measured by rankings), AI search visibility is measured by citation frequency, answer inclusion, and share of voice across platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Bing Copilot.
- ChatGPT SEO
Optimization strategies specifically aimed at appearing in ChatGPT responses. ChatGPT SEO focuses on creating content that the model can confidently cite, including clear definitions, authoritative sourcing, structured data, and content formats the model prefers to quote. It is a subset of the broader AEO discipline.
- Citable surface
Any digital asset structured and published in a way that AI systems can confidently reference. Citable surfaces include well-structured web pages, FAQs, physician bios, procedure descriptions, and patient-education articles. The more citable surfaces a practice owns, the more opportunities it has to be cited by AI answer engines.
- E-E-A-T
Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness: Google's quality-rater framework for evaluating content credibility. For medical content, E-E-A-T signals include author credentials, institutional affiliations, peer citations, and verifiable clinical experience. AI systems inherit and amplify these signals when deciding which sources to cite.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
The discipline of optimizing content for generative AI systems that synthesize answers rather than return links. GEO encompasses AEO and extends it to cover emerging AI surfaces including voice assistants, AI-generated summaries, and multimodal search interfaces. The core principle: structure content so machines can understand, trust, and cite it.
- Google Business Profile
The free Google listing that controls how a practice appears in Google Search and Maps local results. A complete, verified Google Business Profile is the foundation of local SEO for surgeons: it determines map-pack placement, displays reviews, and surfaces key practice information directly in search results.
- llms.txt
A proposed standard for providing AI language models with machine-readable information about a website. Similar to robots.txt for crawlers, llms.txt offers LLMs structured context about site content, authorship, and citation preferences. Early adoption signals AI-readiness and can improve how models understand and cite a practice's content.
- Map pack
The local-business listings (typically three) that appear at the top of Google search results for location-based queries. For surgeons, map-pack placement is critical because patients searching "orthopedic surgeon near me" see these results first. Ranking depends on Google Business Profile optimization, reviews, proximity, and local relevance signals.
- Patient-education content
Informational articles, videos, and resources that help patients understand conditions, procedures, and treatment options. Beyond patient service, this content builds citable surface: when AI systems answer patient questions about procedures, they prefer to cite authoritative medical sources that demonstrate E-E-A-T.
- Prompt panel
A reporting view that tracks which prompts and queries trigger AI citations of a practice's content. Prompt-panel data reveals what patients are asking AI systems and whether the practice is being cited in the answers. This intelligence informs content strategy and measures AI search visibility over time.
- Review velocity
The rate at which a practice acquires new patient reviews over a given period. High review velocity signals to search engines and AI systems that a practice is active and trusted. It also dilutes the impact of occasional negative reviews, maintaining a strong overall reputation score.
- Structured data / schema
Machine-readable markup (typically JSON-LD using Schema.org vocabulary) embedded in web pages to help search engines and AI systems understand content. For medical practices, structured data marks up physicians, locations, services, FAQs, and reviews, enabling rich results in search and improving AI comprehension.
